There are so many specialties in medicine, and it can get overwhelming to know who to talk with when you are pain or have suffered an injury in sports, in a car accident, or at work. So what exactly is chiropractic medicine?
According to the American Chiropractic Association:
Chiropractic is a health care profession that focuses on disorders of the musculoskeletal system and the nervous system, and the effects of these disorders on general health. Chiropractic care is used most often to treat neuromusculoskeletal complaints, including but not limited to back pain, neck pain, pain in the joints of the arms or legs, and headaches.
Doctors of Chiropractic – often referred to as chiropractors or chiropractic physicians – practice a drug-free, hands-on approach to health care that includes patient examination, diagnosis and treatment. Chiropractors have broad diagnostic skills and are also trained to recommend therapeutic and rehabilitative exercises…
Chiropractic physicians commonly perform “spinal manipulation”, or a “chiropractic adjustment.” This just means a highly controlled and gentle force is applied to joints that are restricted due to a tissue injury, which may be causing inflammation, pain, and diminished function. The adjustment restores the joint’s mobility, thereby decreasing pain, muscle tightness, and increasing the area’s circulation and healing ability. Adjustments are usually very quick and comfortable, though there may be some soreness for up to a day or two as the body is recovering after its injury.
