The most common injury from an auto accident is a neck sprain (more commonly known as “whiplash”). Many people do not seek treatment because you can’t “see” whiplash, and although there may be severe initial pain, most people hope the pain will go away in a few days. Many initial treatments for whiplash focus on painkillers and a neck brace, but this does little to repair the underlying injury.
In a study of 100 people who were rear-ended, 14% of people still had significant pain after 8 years. Another study found one third of people with whiplash injuries in the US still had symptoms 3 years after their accident. These symptom can include neck and back pain, shoulder problems, headaches, dizziness, numbness, vision problems, difficulty concentrating, and an increased risk of degenerative disc disease later in life.
Both chiropractic medicine and physical rehabilitation can help address the injury itself, instead of covering up the symptoms of a condition that should be addressed before it becomes chronic and the patient suffers needlessly. Physical therapy and rehabilitation can repair and strengthen the damaged tissue and help you avoid excessive scar growth. Treatment often begins within the first week after the accident to control pain and diminish swelling. The treatments will then expand over time to help you return to full function. You will learn the skills and exercises to continue your healing at home, and prevent future injuries, so you can get back to doing what you love.
