Exercise for Beginners: Why Bother & How to Get Started

Posted on April 14, 2021

We all know we should be exercising, but it can be intimidating to get started.

Safe Exercise for BeginnersFirst of all, why bother?

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 68% of adults over the age of 20 are overweight or obese. Exercise is one of the best ways to prevent or combat obesity and its consequences. Physical exercise strengthens muscles, optimizes the cardiovascular system, helps control body weight, and benefits your mental health. Plus, you get bragging rights on Facebook.

How do you get started safely?

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) recommends adults get at least 2.5 hours of moderate to intense exercise each week, or 1.25 hours of vigorous aerobic activity. Children need even more, with recommended physical activity of at least one our per day.

If you are concerned about how to get started and feeling comfortable with new movement patterns and routines, an athletic trainer may be appropriate for you. If you are significantly de-conditioned, managing prior injuries, or have other conditions that may complicate the beginning of your exercise journey, a physical therapist or rehabilitation specialist may be of benefit to:

  • Check your flexibility, strength, and endurance
  • Provide guidance on symptoms of overuse, overtraining, or just normal aches and pains.
  • Identify training errors and correct biomechanical problems to improve safety and efficacy.
  • Develop a training plan to minimize risk of injury and help you meet your fitness goals.
