Benefits of Massage Therapy for Pain Management

Posted on March 13, 2017

Benefits of Massage Therapy for Pain Management

Our physicians appreciate the pain management and healing benefits of massage therapy—and both the science and our patients’ experiences confirm these beliefs. The licensed massage therapists at Absolute Wellness Center provide several different styles of massage depending on the needs of each individual patient. Massage therapy is often recommended when a patient is recovering from a personal injury or a car accident injury such as whiplash, back pain, or shoulder pain. Our athletic patients also enjoy our sports massage to naturally improve their muscle tone and make them less injury prone.

Massage Therapy Is Ideal Complement to Chiropractic Care

Generally speaking, massage therapy does many wonderful things for your health, not the least of which is to relieve both mental and physical stress and tension. It has been proven to lower blood pressure, improve sleep patterns and boost the immune system. It naturally warms and loosens musculoskeletal tensions to soothe sore muscles, which actually makes the spine more receptive to chiropractic care – enhancing the positive effects of spinal adjustments on the nervous system. It also promotes circulation throughout the massaged areas and reduces inflammation while releasing endorphins into the system for natural pain management.

Specific types of massage can offer more targeted benefits. Trigger point therapy, for example, is particularly helpful for people who suffer from tight, painful knots (adhesions) deep within their muscles, as often happens after a personal injury. Trigger point massage breaks down these adhesions so the muscles can fully heal and regain their normal range of motion. Sports massage increases circulation to the muscles, which helps to loosen them up for competition or training, while also reducing inflammation from overuse after exercise, enabling a faster recovery between competitions.
