According to the Mayo Clinic, acupuncture is used mainly to relieve discomfort associated with a variety of diseases and conditions, including:
- Chemotherapy-induced and postoperative nausea and vomiting
- Dental pain
- Fibromyalgia
- Headaches, including tension and migraine headaches
- Labor pain
- Low back pain
- Neck pain
- Osteoarthritis
- Menstrual cramps
But that is just a short list. New research is coming out every year on the efficacy of acupuncture in both humans and animals. The Oregon Health Plan even now covers acupuncture treatments for smoking cessation and other addictions. Many of our patients have found relief for a number of other conditions, and acupuncture may be a particularly good treatment option for patients who wish to minimize their use of prescription pain medications, or avoid taking them altogether. Acupuncture can also be very helpful for those who are looking for a more gentle treatment option because massage may be painful or uncomfortable for them, or they are not yet ready for more active treatments like physical therapy.
With so much research supporting the efficacy of acupuncture, it’s not surprising that more health insurance plans cover acupuncture when medically appropriate. This will make acupuncture an even more affordable option for many.
