The American Chiropractic Association compiles a list of excerpts and summaries of recent research studies showing the safety and efficacy of chiropractic care. For instance, you may be interested to learn how much research is out there now to substantiate the efficacy of chiropractic research for neck pain, back pain, headaches, extremity injuries, sports injuries, and many, many other common conditions. Chiropractic medicine is also one of the most highly rated services offered in patient satisfaction surveys according to Consumer Reports.
For instance, you may not know that Blue Cross Blue Shield studied 85,000 of their insured over a two year period in Tennessee, and found cost savings of 40% on health care costs when patients initiated care with a DC rather than an MD. The patients were given completely unrestricted access of their own choosing to either an MD or a DC, with no limitations on visits, and no incentives such as differences in co-pays. Patients could choose who they wanted to see and for how long, and they ended up paying less when they choose a doctor of chiropractic! – Liliedahl et al (2010), Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics
In another study, this one funded by the National Institute of Health’s National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, researchers took 272 patients with mechanical neck pain, divided the group into thirds, and compared results when each group received either spinal manipulative therapy from a doctor of chiropractic, exercise recommendations, or pain medication (over-the-counter pain relievers, narcotics and muscle relaxants). After about 3 months, only a third of those in pain medication group reported a 75% reduction in pain, but 48% of those in the exercise group did, and 57% of the chiropractic manipulation group! — Bronfort et al. (2012), Annals of Internal Medicine
These study results and more are available on the American Chiropractic Association’s Chiropractic Research page (or view in PDF: ACA Chiropractic Research). It pays off to know your research.
